Manage injuries

This topic will help students to learn the first aid skills and knowledge that are required to recognise and manage injuries from wounds and blood loss, fractures, burns, sprains, strains, dislocations, bites and stings.

Injuries can cause blood loss and blood is the life line of the body. Blood carries oxygen, nutrients and new blood cells to the body tissue, and carries all the waste back to the organs to be cleaned and replenished. The body cannot lose too much of this valuable resource. If too much blood is lost, it will interfere with the supply of oxygen and this can have disastrous effects. Prompt and effective treatment of injuries by implementing first aid immediately following injury can greatly aid the recovery of a casualty.

What you’ll learn

On completion of this topic you will know how to apply first aid procedures for managing injuries.
